Part 2: How to plan the perfect potluck dinner
Potluck dinner, potluck supper, potluck lunch: whatever you call it, it comes down to a bring-a-dish-event at which food and drinks are shared by all. It’s the perfect occasion to meet up with friends, discover new recipes AND share your leftovers. But there are some rules to follow…
5 tips for the perfect potluck:
1. E-mail a sign-up sheet
You have to know who’s bringing what, or you’ll end up with pasta, pasta, pasta, four desserts and no veggies.
2. Ask your guests to bring their own serving utensils
Sure, you like to cook, but you don’t have five salad tongs and ten trivets in the house, now do you...
3. Avoid stinky, spicy and strange
Too much garlic or strong spices can ruin the evening in all kinds of ways, and anything that looks weird will be talked about, but not taken.
4. ‘That’ friend can bring the drinks
Assign drinks to that particular friend that is not such a great cook, but make sure he/she is not chronically late or you’ll be completely surrounded by no gin-tonic.
5. Cherish your (pot)luck
Watch others eat your leftover macaroni and cheese, take one of your friend’s impressive couscous-filled peppadew poppers, and be proud of your smart potluck project!
